More About The Kiss by Gustav Klimt
A painting of love, entwingling of two bodies together in passion, that is what The Kiss by Klimt is all about.
Erotic, mythical and largely ambiguous painting, it openly displays two people in the act of foreplay.
In fact, for people who don’t know, Klimt painted this when he had hit rock-bottom with his career. It was a constant pressure to produce an artwork that would save his career.
In frenzy, he painted The Kiss and since then there was no looking back.
The painting was a success with it godly appearance and gold leaves creating an metaphysical aura around it.
This was supposed to be a painting about a couple’s passion that could transcend across space and time.
Use of color to distinguish a masculine and a feminine existence add to the aesthetics of the painting.
It was probably the first time that Klimt added a male figure in his painting.
The geometric black and blocks are used for the man symbolizing strength and vitality of the man.
The female, however, is adorned with flowers with circular patterns hinting at the feminity and fertility of a woman.
What is interesting is, despite the appearance of a man in the painting, his face is not visible. This ultimately diverts the viewers focus on the woman.
There have been quite a bit of controversy over the identity of the woman in the painting. While most of the people believe that it was Emilie Floge, Klimt’s wife, but some like to believe that she might be one of his other endevors.
Despite all the allegation on Klimt to be a womanizer, this painting speaks more than that.
It is a depiction of two people almost drowned in love, embracing each other like this is the last time they will meet.
The expression on the woman’s face envelopes the viewer with a warmth and evokes a feeling of ecstacy and joy.

The end goal of the painting is to evoke affection, passion and eroticism in the couple.
